ARE YOU GOING TO BE A VICTIM THIS HOLIDAY SEASON?

As this holiday season moves into full swing so will those inclined to commit crimes and prey on busy shoppers, those caught up in the giving spirit and those who may be away from their homes. Don’t give these criminals the opportunity they are looking for to make you a victim. The Seaside Police Department offers a few safety tips to help make your holiday season a safe and happy one.

While shopping always remember:

Ø      DO NOT leave your purse unattended in your shopping cart. Hold onto it or carry only what you will need and secure your purse in the trunk of your vehicle.

Ø      Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Wear your purse strapped across your body. Don’t carry your wallet in a loose jacket or loose pocket.

Ø      Whenever possible, use credit cards or checks instead of cash. When using credit cards, make sure that only one credit slip is printed with your charge card. Also, be sure to tear up any carbons that may be used to complete the transaction. Credit card fraud can ruin your holiday season.

Ø      While Shopping, if you need to store purchases in your vehicle, if possible lock them in your trunk. If they must be left in the vehicle, attempt to put them in a non-visible place or cover them from easily being viewed.

If You’re Asked For A Donation, remember:

Ø      Ask for ID, and make inquires to ensure the charity is a legitimate one.

Ø      If you’re not satisfied, don’t donate.

Ø      Never provide credit card numbers or other personal information over the phone unless you’re sure you know who’s calling.

Ø      Consider donating to recognized charitable organizations.

If You Are Leaving Home For The  Holidays Don’t Forget:

Ø      Get an automatic timer for your lights.

Ø      Ask a neighbor or friend to watch your home, and park in the driveway from time to time.

Ø      Don’t forget to have mail and newspaper delivery stopped. If it piles up, it’s a sure sign you’re gone.

Ø      If you are an alarm services subscriber, make sure they have a local person on file to contact if an alarm is activated.

We can never be too careful, prepared or aware. Share this information with family, friends and neighbors. The Seaside Police Department wants everyone to have a safe, happy, and peaceful holiday season.
