SEASIDE POLICE TO FOCUS ON CHILD RESTRAINTS DURING THREE FLAG CAMPAIGN

It’s that time again. The Seaside Police Department, along with officers from Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, will be participating in the 3-Flags Campaign. This Campaign will extend from February 5th through February 18th, 2007. The campaign is in conjunction with national Child Passenger Safety Week (February 12th-18th) and as in the past, the officers will be enforcing safety belt usage and child restraint devices.

During this Campaign, the officers will not only be enforcing Oregon’s primary safety belt law, but focusing on child safety systems. Remember if your child is under 4 years of age and weighs less than 40 pounds, they must ride in a child safety seat. Children over 4 years of age or weighing more than 40 pounds must ride in a booster seat until they reach both age 6 and weigh at least 60 pounds. This will allow the required lap restraint to be positioned properly low across the thighs and the shoulder restraint to be positioned over the collarbone. Passengers over age 16 are themselves responsible for wearing a safety belt. If you need more information on child safety seats or need yours inspected, contact the Seaside Police Department.

Motor vehicle crashes claimed 476 lives in Oregon in 2005. About half of those who died were not wearing safety restraints and could have been saved had they been restrained. Help us make our roadways a safer place and ensure all occupants of motor vehicles are properly secured in safety belts or child safety restraint devices. Remember if you don’t CLICK IT, you are going to get a TICKET.
