PRESS RELEASE

IT’S THREE FLAGS CAMPAIGN TIME

The Three Flags Campaign is a selective traffic enforcement program involving hundreds of law enforcement agencies throughout Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.  Since the passage of the adult belt law in 1990, Oregon crash fatality and injury rates have dropped 43%. The law, along with active enforcement, has resulted in 2006 Oregon driver use rate between 94% (front seat) and 97% (all passengers), continuing to make Oregon one of the top five belt-use states in the United States.

September 10th through the 23rd, officers from the Seaside Police Department will be participating in the 14-day Seatbelt Enforcement Blitz. During this blitz officers will be focusing on “Child Passenger Safety” as well as adult seatbelt use. Remember effective July 1, 2007 changes in the law now require:

Ž    Infants to ride rear-facing until they reach both one year of age AND twenty pounds.

Ž    Children who weigh over 40 pounds must be properly secured in a booster seat until they are age 8 OR 4’9” in height.

Ž    Children who are age 8 OR older or are taller than 4’9” must ride properly secured with the safety belt system.

Ž    Children over one year old AND between 20 and 40 pounds must be properly secured with a forward-facing child safety seat up to a minimum of 40 pounds or the weight limit of the seat.

We at the Seaside Police Department want you and your family to be as safe as possible when traveling our streets and highways, so remember whether you are an adult, young adult or child, whenever you are in a vehicle BUCKLE-UP – EVERY TRIP – EVERY TIME.  If you don’t click it – Expect to get a ticket!
